Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal communication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting the Union Government to designate Chennai as an official embarkation airport for Haj pilgrims departing from Tamil Nadu in 2022. Objecting to the central decision directing state pilgrims to travel over seven hundred kilometers to Kochi in Kerala to board flights, Stalin highlighted the severe logistical hardships and financial burdens this relocation imposes on elderly devotees.
Stalin pointed out that Chennai had successfully served as the primary embarkation hub for pilgrims across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for decades. Forcing senior citizens, women, and economically modest pilgrims to undertake grueling interstate road or rail journeys prior to international flights creates immense physical fatigue and avoidable travel expenses.
The Chief Minister urged the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Haj Committee of India to review the operational arrangements immediately and restore Chennai as a designated embarkation center. Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu remains committed to facilitating seamless pilgrimage experiences for minority communities, demonstrating responsive federal advocacy on behalf of Tamil Nadu citizens rights and travel conveniences.
