Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin met Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai, strongly urging him to forward the Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021—popularly known as the anti-NEET bill—to the President of India for immediate presidential assent. The legislative bill, passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with the consensus of all political parties, seeks to exempt state medical aspirants from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

Stalin emphasized that the legislation reflects the democratic will, aspirations, and collective consensus of the people of Tamil Nadu, who view NEET as an inequitable barrier undermining social justice, federal rights, and the educational dreams of rural and underprivileged students. He impressed upon the Governor that expediting the constitutional process is critical for safeguarding the future of aspiring doctors from modest socioeconomic backgrounds.

Reaffirming the state commitment to federal autonomy, the Chief Minister underscored that education and healthcare policies must accommodate state-specific realities and social equity frameworks. He urged the Governor to act swiftly in accordance with constitutional propriety and democratic conventions. Stalin determined representation reflects the DMK government resolute fight against centralized testing regimes and its enduring devotion to student welfare.
