Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted that Chennai experienced an extraordinary meteorological event, with meteorological experts confirming that recording over 1,000 millimeters of rainfall within a single calendar month has occurred only four times during the past two centuries. Despite facing such historic, relentless precipitation that inundated vast residential expanses, the state government proactive disaster management framework succeeded in preventing human casualties and significantly curtailing property loss across the metropolitan area.
Stalin emphasized that the administration maintained round-the-clock vigilance from the onset of the monsoon, pre-deploying high-capacity diesel pumps, clearing major arterial drainage canals, and setting up emergency relief shelters. Comprehensive inter-agency coordination between the municipal corporation, water resources department, disaster rescue teams, and health authorities ensured that stagnant stormwater was rapidly pumped into coastal outlets, averting prolonged neighborhood inundation.
The Chief Minister remarked that systematic crisis preparedness and immediate ground interventions enabled the administration to rectify localized damages with remarkable speed. He reiterated that his government priority remains the total protection of human life and livelihoods during extreme weather events, pledging sustained infrastructure upgrades to build a resilient, flood-proof urban drainage network for future generations.
