Chief Minister M.K. Stalin voiced sharp political criticism against the Union Government for passing the controversial Dam Safety Bill in Parliament without addressing the legitimate federal concerns raised by Tamil Nadu and other states. Stalin pointed out that the DMK and unified opposition parties had repeatedly demanded referring the legislation to a parliamentary select committee for comprehensive review.
The Chief Minister asserted that the central legislation unconstitutionally usurps powers of state governments over dams located within or outside their territorial jurisdictions. For Tamil Nadu, the law poses serious ramifications regarding the operational control and maintenance of interstate reservoirs like the Mullaperiyar, Parambikulam, and Aliyar dams, which were constructed and maintained under historic state agreements.
Stalin cautioned that the Union BJP administration is utilizing its parliamentary majority to subvert the constitutional rights of states that elected them. He asserted that centralizing control over water resources harms state agricultural interests and weakens the cooperative federal spirit enshrined in the Constitution.
By standing firm on state autonomy, Stalin positioned Tamil Nadu as a leading voice defending regional interests. His principled opposition highlighted the imperative of preserving constitutional federalism against centralizing legislative maneuvers.
