Presiding over the maiden consultative meeting of the newly constituted Chennai Flood Mitigation Committee headed by retired civil servant Dr. V. Thiruppugazh, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a direct call for actionable, permanent engineering solutions to tackle urban flooding. The advisory committee comprises distinguished hydrologists, urban planners, disaster management experts, and environmental scientists.
Stalin urged the committee members to avoid generic recommendations and instead submit granular, zone-specific, and practically viable project reports for every flood-vulnerable basin in the Chennai metropolitan area. He stressed that recurring inundation disrupts public life, harms small businesses, and damages infrastructure, necessitating a scientific overhaul of the city stormwater drainage architecture.
The Chief Minister assured the panel of complete administrative backing and necessary budgetary allocations to implement their technical recommendations without bureaucratic hurdles. He highlighted that modern flood management requires integrating natural macro-drainage basins, expanding canal holding capacities, and restoring ecological wetland sponges across the capital.
Through this institutional initiative, Stalin demonstrated proactive, science-based governance. By engaging top technical experts to devise comprehensive solutions, the Chief Minister laid the foundation for transforming Chennai into a climate-resilient metropolis capable of withstanding extreme weather events.
