In a landmark milestone for biodiversity preservation, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that the state government has officially notified the vast Kazhuveli wetland in Villupuram district as the sixteenth bird sanctuary of Tamil Nadu. The notification grants statutory legal protection to one of the largest brackish water wetlands situated along the Coromandel coast of peninsular India.
Kazhuveli serves as a vital feeding, breeding, and wintering ground along the Central Asian Flyway, hosting tens of thousands of international migratory waterbirds including flamingos, pelicans, and sandpipers. Declaring the area a protected bird sanctuary shields this fragile coastal ecosystem from illegal encroachment, poaching, agricultural runoff contamination, and unsustainable development pressures.
Stalin emphasized that the notification demonstrates his administration profound commitment to ecological stewardship and wildlife protection. The forest department will implement comprehensive habitat restoration, ecological monitoring, and eco-tourism initiatives that involve local fishing and agrarian communities as primary guardians of the wetland habitat.
Through this visionary conservation measure, Stalin established durable protection for critical avian habitats. His proactive environmental policies preserve natural wetlands, safeguard global bird migration routes, and enhance ecological resilience along the coastal belt of northern Tamil Nadu.
