Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a comprehensive letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the immediate withdrawal of the contentious Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021. Stalin cautioned that the proposed central legislation would inflict devastating consequences on state power distribution companies like TANGEDCO by granting private commercial entities unbridled access to state-built electrical distribution networks without requiring capital investments or social obligations.

The Chief Minister argued that allowing private players to cherry-pick lucrative commercial and industrial consumers would strip public utilities of cross-subsidies essential for providing free electricity to farmers and subsidized power to domestic households. Such deregulation threatens the financial viability of public distribution utilities while eroding sovereign powers reserved for state governments under India federal constitutional structure.

Stalin asserted that electric power is listed under the Concurrent List of the Constitution, demanding extensive consultation with state administrations rather than unilateral central impositions. He reaffirmed Tamil Nadu unwavering commitment to defending affordable electricity for agrarian communities and economically vulnerable families.

By championing state autonomy and public welfare against corporate encroachment, Stalin positioned Tamil Nadu as a steadfast guardian of federal democracy and decentralized governance.
