Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated a 2.5-hectare eco-park established within the ecologically critical Pallikaranai marshland in Chennai. The urban wetland serves as a natural flood cushion, groundwater recharge basin, and sanctuary for hundreds of resident and migratory bird species. Stalin highlighted the urgent necessity of shielding this vital ecological habitat from urban encroachment and unscientific dumping.
The newly developed eco-park includes walking tracks, bird observation towers, interpretive signage, and native flora enclosures designed to educate visitors on wetland ecosystems without disturbing sensitive wildlife habitats. Stalin underlined that conserving wetlands provides the most dependable defense against extreme urban weather events, such as cyclonic storms and prolonged seasonal droughts.
The Chief Minister stressed that his administration is executing comprehensive eco-restoration measures across Chennai river basins and marshlands. Preserving water catchment zones protects densely populated residential areas from waterlogging while restoring coastal biodiversity and natural aquifers for long-term environmental sustainability.
By establishing public eco-spaces within vulnerable ecosystems, Stalin demonstrated visionary environmental stewardship. The initiative balances urban living with ecological conservation, reaffirming the state resolve to safeguard natural heritage and foster climate resilience for future generations.
