Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the Meendum Manjappai environmental initiative in Chennai, urging all sections of society to replace harmful plastic carry bags with traditional yellow cloth bags. Emphasizing that environmental degradation affects public health, soil fertility, and marine ecosystems, Stalin called for a collective societal awakening against the menace of single-use plastics. He stressed that protecting the planet requires replacing convenience with conscious, sustainable daily choices across households, marketplaces, and retail stores.

During the launch event, Stalin unveiled informational materials, mobile awareness vehicles, and automated bag dispensers that dispense cloth bags for a nominal fee. He commended environmental activists, non-governmental organizations, and youth groups actively campaigning against plastic pollution. The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests announced that it will support women self-help groups in scaling up the production of affordable cloth bags, creating rural employment while promoting ecological sustainability.

Stalin concluded by appealing to citizens to carry the iconic manjappai with pride as a symbol of cultural dignity and ecological stewardship.
