Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conferred the prestigious Muthamizharignar Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Awards for the years 2017 through 2021 during an official ceremony in Chennai. The distinguished state honours were presented to eminent literary figures and thinkers who have made foundational contributions to Tamil literature, historical research, and poetry. The awardees included celebrated poet Erode Tamilanban, late scholar Poovannan, Sahitya Akademi winning novelist and parliamentarian Su. Venkatesan, acclaimed lyricist and author Kavingnar Vairamuthu, and ideological thinker Suba. Veerapandian.

Presenting each recipient with a citation and cash purse, Stalin praised their enduring dedication to modernizing Tamil literature and documenting Dravidian history. He observed that these five literary scholars have enriched Tamil intellectual life through groundbreaking poetry, historical novels, linguistic criticism, and rationalist essays that inspire generations of readers.

The Chief Minister emphasized that reviving these prestigious state awards clears previous administrative delays and fulfills the state's historical obligation to honour towering intellectual talent. By recognizing writers who articulate progressive social values, Stalin reaffirmed his government's steadfast commitment to celebrating classical Tamil identity and supporting democratic cultural discourse across Tamil Nadu.
