Chief Minister M.K. Stalin informed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly that the state government is initiating legislative steps to appoint Vice-Chancellors to state-run universities, transferring powers currently exercised by the Governor. Replying to queries raised by legislators during floor proceedings, Stalin explained that elected state administrations must possess statutory authority over higher education to ensure academic excellence and policy cohesion. He emphasized that democratizing university administration aligns with federal principles and upholds state autonomy.
In addition to university reforms, Stalin addressed urban transport connectivity by confirming plans to extend the Chennai Metro Rail corridor up to Vandalur. This strategic transit expansion aims to accommodate booming commuter traffic across southern suburban corridors, connecting major educational campuses, residential clusters, and peripheral transit terminals. Stalin noted that expanding mass rapid transit reduces highway congestion and lowers carbon emissions across the metropolitan area.
By addressing both academic governance and public transit infrastructure in the legislature, Stalin demonstrated a balanced governance agenda. His intervention underscored the administration's twin priorities of asserting state rights in higher education while modernizing urban civic infrastructure for long-term regional development.
