Chief Minister M.K. Stalin sanctioned immediate restoration works across thousands of kilometers of damaged roadways throughout Tamil Nadu, following unprecedented flooding caused by the 2021 northeast monsoon. Under the comprehensive repair package, works were ordered across 312 kilometers in Greater Chennai Corporation, 1,675 kilometers in other municipal corporations and municipalities, and 1,110 kilometers across town panchayats statewide.
The Chief Minister explained that historic rainfall inundated major urban centers and suburban belts, causing extensive asphalt erosion, subgrade damage, and widespread potholes. Recognizing the severe distress faced by motorists, freight transporters, and bus commuters, Stalin directed local administration departments to bypass routine administrative delays and execute road restoration on emergency footing. The plan encompasses surface milling, bitumen laying, stormwater drain desilting, and pavement repairs to prevent future waterlogging.
Stalin emphasized that the state government allocated special emergency funds to ensure that municipal bodies could carry out quality repairs without budget constraints. He instructed district collectors and civic chiefs to enforce rigorous technical standards and ensure transparent contract execution. Stalin affirmed that upgrading urban transit networks remains vital for economic recovery and public safety.
