Editorial context

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal demi-official letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his urgent personal intervention to ensure the inclusion of Tamil Nadu's tableau in the 2022 Republic Day parade in New Delhi. Expressing deep public anguish, Stalin noted that rejecting the state's cultural float during the screening process caused widespread hurt and disappointment among citizens across Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister explained that the design featured eminent historical leaders from southern India who waged determined struggles against British colonial rule decades before the formal nationalist awakening. These icons included Rani Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga, the Maruthu Pandiyar brothers, pioneering poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar, and freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar, who launched the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to break colonial maritime dominance. Stalin stressed that excluding these national heroes from an event celebrating constitutional democracy sends a deeply discouraging message regarding regional recognition.

Stalin urged the Prime Minister to direct defense ministry officials to reconsider their administrative decision and accommodate Tamil Nadu's float. He reiterated that celebrating diverse regional freedom fighters enriches national unity and accords due honor to the sacrifices of southern patriots in India's independence struggle.
