Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin solemnized a self-respect wedding ceremony at the family event of party headquarters secretary Poochi Murugan in Chennai, extending warm felicitations to the newlyweds. Addressing the gathering, Stalin commended the family for embracing reformist wedding rites pioneered by the Dravidian movement to dismantle regressive ritualism and foster gender equality across households.
During his address, the Chief Minister urged parents throughout Tamil Nadu to bestow authentic Tamil names upon their newborn children. He explained that language remains the foundational bedrock of self-respect philosophy and social consciousness. Choosing meaningful Tamil names, Stalin observed, actively protects linguistic identity and instills cultural confidence in coming generations. He encouraged citizens to turn this cultural responsibility into a sustained community practice.
Stalin recalled that self-respect weddings symbolize progressive social change championed by Thanthai Periyar and legalized under former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai. He stressed that party functionaries and cadres must consistently uphold rationalist traditions in daily life. By conducting family ceremonies without ostentation or superstitious rituals, Stalin noted, the Dravidian movement reinforces social justice and modern democratic consciousness across the entire state.
