Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed a formal communication to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, seeking his direct personal intervention to ensure that water storage in Siruvani Dam is maintained up to its Full Reservoir Level. Stalin explained that maintaining optimal reservoir capacity is crucial to safeguard drinking water supplies for Coimbatore City and neighboring urban habitations, in strict accordance with the bilateral interstate agreement signed between both states in 1973.
The Chief Minister pointed out that unilateral reductions in the reservoir water level by Kerala irrigation authorities had drastically decreased daily raw water discharge to Coimbatore, triggering severe supply shortfalls during summer months. Stalin highlighted that Coimbatore is an essential manufacturing hub with a large working population dependent on reliable municipal water services. He emphasized that respecting interstate water-sharing pacts fosters regional goodwill and ensures equitable water security across shared river basins.
Stalin urged the Kerala government to issue immediate operational instructions to dam engineers to allow storage up to the full licensed capacity. He expressed confidence that mutual inter-governmental cooperation will resolve technical differences and guarantee adequate drinking water for Coimbatore residents.
