On the 53rd memorial anniversary of Dravidian leader and former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recalled Anna's famous constitutional aphorism questioning whether a nation needs a governor any more than a goat needs a beard. Stalin noted that Anna raised this profound inquiry with deep foresight, foreseeing how nominated gubernatorial offices could be weaponized to undermine elected state governments and dilute regional self-governance.
The Chief Minister observed that contemporary political developments across India continue to validate Anna's critique. Stalin emphasized that elected state legislatures derive their authority directly from sovereign citizens, making executive overreach by unelected governors a serious threat to democratic norms and constitutional federalism. He stressed that delaying assent to bills passed by state assemblies violates constitutional principles and ignores popular mandates.
Stalin affirmed that his government remains firmly committed to advancing the path of state autonomy charted by Perarignar Anna. He urged democratic forces across the country to unite in safeguarding state legislative rights, reiterating that Tamil Nadu will persistently resist any attempts to reduce states to administrative subordinates of the Union Government.
