Editorial context

Expressing grave concern over Sri Lanka's decision to auction seized Indian fishing vessels, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent communication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting immediate diplomatic intervention. Stalin pointed out that the Sri Lankan government possesses no legal authority to auction motorized craft belonging to Tamil Nadu fishermen, warning that such arbitrary confiscations destroy the fragile economic livelihood of coastal communities.

The Chief Minister urged the Union Government to register strong official disapproval through diplomatic channels and prevail upon Colombo to withdraw the public auction notice immediately. Stalin requested the Ministry of External Affairs to secure concurrence from the Sri Lankan government to facilitate an early visit by a delegation of Tamil Nadu state officials and fisherfolk representatives to inspect and retrieve impounded boats. He stressed that these boats represent the life savings of hardworking coastal families who face immense financial distress.

Stalin emphasized that the prolonged detention of fishermen and seizure of their assets violates bilateral understandings and humanitarian norms. He reiterated Tamil Nadu's consistent demand for a permanent diplomatic solution that protects traditional fishing rights and ensures oceanic safety in the Palk Bay waters.
