Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the West Bengal Governor for unilaterally proroguing the state legislative assembly session, declaring that the move was entirely devoid of the constitutional propriety expected from such an exalted office. Stalin pointed out that the arbitrary decision directly contravened well-established parliamentary norms, judicial precedents, and democratic conventions governing relations between the constitutional head and the state legislature.
The Chief Minister emphasized that under the Indian constitutional system, a Governor is bound to act upon the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers headed by the Chief Minister regarding summoning or proroguing the legislative house. Deviating from this settled constitutional standard threatens the supremacy of elected representatives and creates unwarranted friction between constitutional offices. Stalin warned that partisan actions by Governors erode federal harmony and set dangerous precedents that imperil parliamentary democracy across all states.
Expressing unyielding solidarity with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the people of West Bengal, Stalin reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's resolve to defend federal autonomy. He urged all democratic forces across the country to condemn gubernatorial transgressions and safeguard the constitutional sovereignty of state assemblies.
