Beloved Didi @MamataOfficial telephoned me to share her concern and anguish on the Constitutional overstepping and brazen misuse of power by the Governors of non-BJP ruled states. She suggested for a meeting of Opposition CMs. (1/2)
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin revealed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee contacted him telephonically to share profound concern and anguish over repeated constitutional overstepping and brazen misuse of authority by Governors in non-BJP ruled states. During the high-level discussion, Banerjee proposed organizing a dedicated conclave of opposition Chief Ministers to mount a coordinated constitutional defense of federal principles and state autonomy.
Stalin concurred with Banerjee's assessment, noting that appointed Governors across several states have increasingly exceeded their ceremonial constitutional boundaries by withholding assent to bills passed by elected legislatures, meddling in university governance, and issuing public criticisms against state cabinets. He observed that such partisan conduct compromises parliamentary democracy, violates the spirit of cooperative federalism, and subverts the will of sovereign electorates who choose their representatives.
Welcoming Banerjee's initiative to convene regional leaders, the Chief Minister underscored that mutual coordination among non-BJP administrations is indispensable to protect federal rights. Stalin reaffirmed Tamil Nadu's full support for collective legal, legislative, and political actions to restore constitutional propriety and ensure that the exalted office of Governor respects democratic boundaries.
