I've made an earnest appeal to our Hon'ble @PMOIndia regarding the disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) at the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant.

In the interest of public safety, the SNF may be transported back to Russia or permanently stored in a DGR in an uninhabited area. https://t.co/bNDeXws1xr

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing serious public safety concerns regarding the on-site storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Stalin urged the Union government to transport the spent fuel back to the Russian Federation or permanently store it in a Deep Geological Repository located far away from densely inhabited areas.

Highlighting safety fears among coastal fishing communities and residents of southern Tamil Nadu, Stalin emphasized that storing highly radioactive nuclear waste near coastal zones poses immense ecological, radiological, and environmental risks. He pointed out that initial understandings regarding Kudankulam envisioned sending spent fuel back to the country of origin. Storing dangerous waste locally in Away-From-Reactor facilities without a proven deep geological repository compromises public trust and environmental security.

The Chief Minister urged the Union government to prioritize environmental protection and human life above technical conveniences. He reiterated that Tamil Nadu remains committed to public safety and sustainable energy transitions, demanding transparent consultative mechanisms with state authorities and local communities before finalizing long-term nuclear waste disposal protocols.
