#InternationalMotherLanguageDay2022

Editorial context

Concluding a two-part message on International Mother Language Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged citizens and political leaders nationwide to resolve toward establishing an equal India where all recognized languages are accorded constitutional equality, completely free from the cultural or administrative dominance of any single linguistic group. Stalin asserted that true national strength emerges from mutual respect among India's diverse linguistic communities.

The Chief Minister emphasized that imposing one language over diverse linguistic nationalities undermines the federal compact and democratic spirit envisioned by the framers of the Constitution. Drawing historical inspiration from the courageous sacrifices of Tamil language martyrs who resisted imposition, Stalin argued that linguistic rights are inseparable from fundamental human dignity and democratic freedom. He called for elevating all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule to official union status.

Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravidian movement has perpetually championed linguistic federalism and cultural democracy. He pledged that Tamil Nadu will continue leading national efforts to preserve regional tongues, resist linguistic homogenization, and ensure that every linguistic group in India enjoys equal dignity, educational autonomy, and administrative representation.
