Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin dispatched an urgent official letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, requesting his personal diplomatic intervention to secure the immediate release of fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Kerala who were apprehended by maritime authorities of Indonesia and Seychelles. Stalin pointed out that deep-sea fishing crews venturing into oceanic waters often face mechanical failures, severe weather drift, and ambiguous maritime boundary crossings that lead to unexpected foreign detention.
The Chief Minister stressed that prolonged incarceration in foreign jails causes intense emotional anguish and severe financial distress to vulnerable fishing families dependent entirely on daily ocean catches. Stalin urged the Ministry of External Affairs to direct Indian embassies in Jakarta and Victoria to establish immediate consular access, arrange legal representation, provide essential provisions, and expedite repatriation formalities for all detained seafaring workers.
Stalin reaffirmed that the Tamil Nadu government continues to prioritize the safety, livelihood rights, and welfare of coastal communities. He pressed the Union government to maintain proactive diplomatic dialogue with neighboring littoral nations to prevent prolonged detentions and establish humane standard operating procedures for stranded artisanal and mechanized fishing crews.
