Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed profound gratitude to all legislative parties for demonstrating complete political unity in passing an assembly resolution opposing Karnataka proposed construction of the Mekedatu balancing reservoir. Stalin condemned Karnataka attempts to build the dam across the Cauvery river, emphasizing that the project flagrantly violates binding verdicts delivered by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court of India. He reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu will never permit any construction that curtails downstream river flows.

The unanimous resolution urged the Union government and central regulatory bodies, including the Central Water Commission, to deny techno-economic clearances and environmental permissions to the disputed project. Stalin pointed out that Cauvery delta farmers depend entirely on timely water releases for staple paddy cultivation. Any unauthorized upstream impoundment would devastate the livelihood of millions of agrarian families and trigger severe drinking water shortages across multiple districts.

Stalin called upon all political forces in Tamil Nadu to stand shoulder to shoulder in defending state riparian rights. He assured farmers and citizens that his government will wage an uncompromising legal and constitutional battle, safeguarding the state water security, agricultural prosperity, and federal dignity.
