Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a comprehensive clarification regarding the revision of property tax rates across urban local bodies, explaining the fiscal circumstances behind the decision. Stalin emphasized that the tax restructuring was not undertaken voluntarily by the state government, but was an obligatory prerequisite imposed by the Union government for sanctioning crucial local body grants. He noted that failure to implement the revision would have resulted in the state losing thousands of crores in municipal development funds.
The Chief Minister underscored that the revision structure was designed with deep social sensitivity, ensuring that eighty-three percent of economically vulnerable and lower-middle-class households face minimal or negligible financial impact. Stalin pointed out that while property taxes in Chennai and other municipal corporations had remained stagnant for decades, inflation and urban service costs had escalated exponentially. Modernizing civic revenue mechanisms enables municipal bodies to maintain clean streets, drinking water systems, and public sanitation.
Stalin reaffirmed that public interest and welfare protection remain central to every policy choice made by his administration. He assured citizens that enhanced municipal revenues will be utilized transparently to upgrade civic amenities, guaranteeing better urban living conditions for all residents.
