Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a stern condemnation against Union Home Minister Amit Shah for advocating that citizens from different states communicate in Hindi instead of English. Stalin characterized the statement as a direct assault on the foundational integrity of the Indian nation. He emphasized that India is a mosaic of rich linguistic traditions, cautioning that continuous attempts by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party leadership to enforce linguistic uniformity erode harmonious coexistence.
The Chief Minister pointed out that English serves as a neutral, practical link language that provides equitable access to economic opportunities and higher education for all citizens regardless of geography. Forcing Hindi as an official medium of interstate communication places non-Hindi speaking citizens at a severe disadvantage, creating second-class citizenship within the country. Stalin noted that preserving multilingualism is vital to maintaining social cohesion and equal federal partnership.
Stalin reiterated that the Dravidian movement has historically defended mother tongues against central imposition, leading historic anti-Hindi agitations to protect linguistic autonomy. He called upon enlightened citizens across India to reject divisive linguistic agendas, reaffirming his unwavering dedication to safeguarding regional languages and upholding the constitutional promise of unity in diversity.
