My govt is committed to help the SL Tamils who are reeling under severe food crisis & send them essential supplies. I request Hon'ble @DrSJaishankar to facilitate it at the earliest and also intervene to enable the early release of 12 Indian fishermen apprehended on 23rd March. https://t.co/duAqwXW54g

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote an urgent letter to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, conveying the state government readiness to dispatch essential food grains, milk powder, and life-saving medicines to Sri Lankan Tamils facing acute shortages. Stalin noted that the island nation is experiencing an unprecedented economic collapse, leaving vulnerable populations without access to basic sustenance. He requested the Union government to grant immediate diplomatic clearance and logistics approval to enable Tamil Nadu relief shipments.

Additionally, the Chief Minister pressed for high-level diplomatic intervention to secure the swift repatriation of twelve Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on March 23. Stalin pointed out that recurring arrests of traditional fishers and the impounding of their costly mechanized boats impose devastating economic distress on coastal fishing families in the Palk Bay region.

Stalin emphasized that the Union government must pursue a permanent diplomatic resolution to protect traditional fishing rights. He reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu stands ready to shoulder humanitarian responsibilities while demanding that the Centre act decisively to protect the lives, liberty, and livelihoods of coastal fishermen.
