Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made a historic policy announcement in the state legislative assembly, declaring that June 3, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Muthamizharignar Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, will henceforth be commemorated annually as an official state government festival. Stalin also announced the installation of a majestic bronze statue of Karunanidhi within the Omandurar Government Estate complex in Chennai, honoring his extraordinary lifetime of service to the Tamil nation.
The Chief Minister described the decision as a heartfelt tribute to a titan who devoted over seven decades of relentless public life to awakening Tamil consciousness, dismantling archaic social orthodoxies, and accelerating modernization. Stalin noted that Karunanidhi served as Chief Minister for five terms, authoring foundational social welfare programs, modern industrial infrastructure, and pioneering reservation policies that transformed Tamil Nadu into a progressive powerhouse.
Stalin emphasized that commemorating Karunanidhi birthday as a state festival will inspire coming generations to embrace rationalism, social equity, and linguistic self-respect. He affirmed that the grand statue at Omandurar Estate will stand as an enduring monument honoring a leader whose visionary governance shaped modern Tamil Nadu.
