Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commended the courageous frontline personnel and administrative officials who worked tirelessly day and night to extinguish the major fire outbreak at the Perungudi garbage dump yard in Chennai. Stalin expressed deep appreciation to the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services department, the Greater Chennai Corporation, and municipal disaster teams for their coordinated, relentless efforts in controlling the hazardous blaze under difficult weather conditions.
The Chief Minister emphasized the vital administrative proverb that prevention is far superior to cure, instructing municipal commissioners, urban planners, and environmental experts to formulate permanent containment strategies to avert similar landfill disasters in the future. He stressed that recurring landfill blazes cause significant air pollution, environmental degradation, and acute health hazards for surrounding residential communities, demanding comprehensive waste management overhauls.
Stalin directed city authorities to accelerate legacy waste biomining operations, improve landfill monitoring through specialized temperature sensors, and enforce segregated municipal waste processing at the neighborhood level. He reaffirmed the state administration resolve to protect public health and urban ecology through scientific waste remediation, constant monitoring, and proactive environmental management across the Chennai metropolitan area.
