Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin sent an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting immediate central government intervention to curb the unprecedented and persistent price escalation of raw cotton and yarn. Stalin emphasized that unchecked price volatility in essential spinning inputs has unleashed severe disruptions across Tamil Nadu vibrant textile manufacturing value chain, which traditionally serves as a major generator of industrial employment.

The Chief Minister highlighted that thousands of spinning mills, handloom societies, powerloom units, and garment exporting enterprises across regional hubs like Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Erode, and Karur are facing production shutdowns and financial insolvency. He pointed out that soaring yarn rates severely impair export competitiveness, leading to order cancellations and threatening the daily livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of textile workers.

Stalin urged the central government to take decisive regulatory measures, including duty rationalizations and strict anti-hoarding controls, to stabilize domestic raw material supplies at reasonable price points. Reaffirming his administration commitment to safeguarding regional industrial vitality, the Chief Minister reiterated that prompt central action remains essential to prevent widespread industrial unrest and ensure the survival of India foremost textile manufacturing cluster.
