Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the historic early opening of the Mettur Stanley Reservoir in May for Kuruvai paddy cultivation, marking an unprecedented milestone in the irrigation history of independent India. Stalin recalled that during the previous year, the government strictly adhered to the customary June 12 date, ensuring disciplined management so that water reached the furthest tail-end areas of the Cauvery Delta. With copious seasonal inflows and robust storage levels, the administration decided to advance water release to benefit farming communities.
The Chief Minister highlighted that opening the reservoir in May provides delta farmers with a distinct agronomic advantage. Advancing the sowing window allows cultivators to complete Kuruvai harvesting operations well before the heavy northeast monsoon rains arrive in October, effectively preventing catastrophic crop damage from seasonal flooding. Stalin noted that the state government backed this early release with comprehensive canal desilting and dedicated agricultural input distribution packages across all delta districts.
Stalin affirmed his administration's steadfast commitment to protecting farmer welfare and restoring economic vitality to the Cauvery Delta. He expressed confidence that timely irrigation will yield record agricultural harvests across Tamil Nadu.
