Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the constitution of an high-level expert committee headed by retired High Court Judge Justice K. Chandru to examine the hazards of online gambling. The panel was mandated to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks, analyzing the financial devastation, psychological distress, and suicides linked to online betting platforms. Stalin declared that unlike the previous administration's legally vulnerable ordinance, his government will enact durable, constitutionally sound legislation to eradicate this social menace.
The Chief Minister observed that online gambling applications prey aggressively on vulnerable youth and working-class citizens, drawing them into catastrophic debt traps that often culminate in tragic losses of life. Stalin stressed that formulating effective prohibitory legislation requires rigorous legal analysis of technical mechanisms, algorithmic manipulation, and constitutional jurisdictions. The Justice Chandru committee includes legal scholars, psychiatric experts, police officers, and information technology specialists to ensure thorough recommendations.
Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu's forthcoming statutory ban will provide a robust legal model for other Indian states facing similar digital betting crises. He reiterated his administration's determination to protect families from financial ruin and defend public welfare through firm legislative action.
