Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that an all-party delegation led by Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan will travel to New Delhi to convey the state's fierce opposition against Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu reservoir project. Stalin declared that Karnataka's persistent efforts to build an dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, and attempts to discuss the detailed project report in Cauvery Water Management Authority meetings, violate Supreme Court verdicts and existing interstate agreements.
The Chief Minister stated that constructing the Mekedatu reservoir would obstruct natural river flows, depriving delta farmers of their lawful share of Cauvery waters. Stalin noted that any unilateral impoundment upstream would jeopardize standing crops across the Cauvery delta, devastating the agricultural livelihood of millions of farmers. He emphasized that the Cauvery Water Management Authority lacks legal jurisdiction to consider new dam proposals without the prior unanimous consent of all co-basin states.
Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu's political parties stand united in defending the vital water rights of Cauvery delta farmers. He reiterated that his government will utilize all legal, political, and constitutional avenues to halt Karnataka's unauthorized construction efforts and protect Tamil Nadu's riparian entitlements.
