Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote an urgent letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, requesting his immediate intervention to maintain water storage in the Siruvani Dam up to its Full Reservoir Level of 878.50 meters. Stalin highlighted that the Kerala Irrigation Department has been restricting the reservoir's water level to 877.00 meters, which is 1.50 meters below the designed capacity. This unilateral drawdown severely restricts water releases, creating acute shortages for drinking water supply systems serving Coimbatore Municipal Corporation.

The Chief Minister pointed out that the Siruvani reservoir represents the primary drinking water source for hundreds of thousands of residents across Coimbatore city and adjacent suburban neighborhoods. Stalin emphasized that reducing storage capacity during peak summer months undermines municipal water distribution and causes public distress. He noted that Tamil Nadu has repeatedly raised this concern with Kerala authorities, urging compliance with the interstate water supply agreement signed between the two states.

Stalin urged the Kerala Chief Minister to issue prompt directives to his state's irrigation engineers to permit filling up to the full reservoir level. He stressed that cooperative management of shared reservoirs is essential to secure essential drinking water requirements for Coimbatore.
