Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the landmark 200,000th centre of the flagship Illam Thedi Kalvi volunteer education scheme in Tiruvannamalai, celebrating the initiative's success in bridging post-pandemic learning gaps. Praised by education experts and adopted as a policy model by other states, the community-based schooling initiative deploys trained volunteers to conduct remedial evening classes for primary school children. Stalin highlighted a moving speech delivered by student Shalini as living testimony to the program's transformative academic and social impact.
The Illam Thedi Kalvi scheme was launched to mitigate severe learning deficits caused by prolonged school closures during the coronavirus pandemic. By establishing evening learning centres in neighborhood streets and community spaces, the program provides personalized academic support in foundational literacy and numeracy. Stalin noted that mobilizing over two hundred thousand educated women volunteers represents one of the largest decentralized civic education movements ever organized in India.
The Chief Minister commended volunteer teachers for their dedication to rural children's educational progress. Stalin emphasized that the initiative not only restored academic skills but also built community confidence and eliminated dropout rates among marginalized pupils. He pledged continuous government funding to sustain foundational learning innovations across Tamil Nadu.
