Hon'ble @PMOIndia,

The reply given by MoS @MoHFW_INDIA in Parliament has caused anxiety among students who returned from Ukraine and are unable to continue their studies.

I request your urgent intervention in this regard & take steps to provide them with alternative options. https://t.co/4KJghCN37G

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed an urgent letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting prompt central intervention to safeguard the academic careers of thousands of Indian medical students evacuated from war-torn Ukraine. Stalin highlighted that an official reply given by the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in Parliament—stating that existing National Medical Commission regulations do not permit accommodating foreign returnees in domestic institutions—had caused profound despair and acute psychological distress among affected students and their families.

The Chief Minister urged the Union Government to adopt an empathetic, pragmatic approach, pointing out that these young scholars returned to India due to extraordinary humanitarian crises and geopolitical conflict beyond their control. He requested the Prime Minister to coordinate with regulatory bodies, state medical universities, and private institutions to devise viable alternative arrangements, such as lateral admissions or clinical training opportunities within Indian medical colleges. Stalin noted that Tamil Nadu stands ready to support humane policy solutions to protect students who have already invested crucial years and resources. He emphasized that the nation cannot abandon aspiring medical doctors in distress, calling for compassionate national leadership.
