With Pallikaranai Marsh, Pichavaram mangroves & Karikili bird sanctuary now being recognised as new Ramsar sites - the most prestigious International recognition for wetlands - TN now has four Ramsar sites including Kodiakkarai. I congratulate TN Forest Dept on this milestone.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin congratulated the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and ecological conservationists as three ecologically significant wetland habitats—Pallikaranai Marsh in Chennai, Pichavaram Mangroves in Cuddalore, and Karikili Bird Sanctuary in Chengalpattu—secured prestigious international recognition as Ramsar sites. With these three major additions joining the existing Kodiakkarai or Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu's tally of Ramsar sites reached four. Stalin described the international distinction as a sterling validation of the state's proactive ecological stewardship, scientific wetland documentation, and persistent conservation advocacy on international platforms.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Pallikaranai Marsh serves as Chennai's natural sponge, vital for flood mitigation and groundwater recharge, while Pichavaram hosts one of the world's most intricate mangrove ecosystems shielding coastal villages against cyclones. Karikili Bird Sanctuary provides a vital breeding habitat for thousands of indigenous and migratory waterfowl. Stalin emphasized that safeguarding these fragile ecosystems from urbanization, industrial encroachment, and plastic pollution is essential for climate resilience and ecological security. He reaffirmed his government's resolve to invest in scientific wetland restoration, afforestation, and community conservation partnerships to protect Tamil Nadu's rich biodiversity for generations to come.
