Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin commended the grand and solemn conduct of official state celebrations honoring Emperor Rajendra Chola I at the historic capital of Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district. Commemorating the emperor's birth anniversary, celebrated annually on Aadi Thiruvathirai, Stalin paid tribute to the monarch's architectural and engineering prowess. He recalled that following his victorious northern expedition, Rajendra Chola founded Gangaikonda Cholapuram, constructing a grand imperial capital and an awe-inspiring temple that mirrored the majestic architectural grandeur of the Thanjavur Brihadisvara Temple built by his father, Raja Raja Chola I.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the monument stands as an immortal testament to Tamil engineering ingenuity, monumental stone sculpture, and exquisite bronze metallurgy. In addition to creating spiritual landmarks, Rajendra Chola engineered massive freshwater reservoirs like the Cholagangam lake, demonstrating advanced hydraulic planning that supported agriculture for centuries. Stalin noted that his government organized the festival with official state honors to ensure that contemporary generations recognize their ancestors' civilizational accomplishments. He reiterated the administration's pledge to preserve historic monuments, fund archaeological research, and promote Gangaikonda Cholapuram as a premier international heritage destination.
