Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that six additional ecologically rich wetlands across the state have received prestigious international recognition as Ramsar sites. The newly designated habitats include Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary in Tirunelveli, Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve, Vembannur Wetland Complex in Kanyakumari, Vellode Bird Sanctuary in Erode, historic Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary in Chengalpattu, and Udhayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary in Tiruvarur. Expressing joy over the international honors, Stalin stated that the designations recognize Tamil Nadu's long-standing tradition of protecting avifauna, coastal mangroves, and delicate wetland ecosystems.
Stalin praised wildlife officials, environmental researchers, and local village communities for their dedicated stewardship in nurturing these biodiversity hotspots over generations. He noted that protecting varied ecological landscapes—from coastal coral reefs in the Gulf of Mannar to inland irrigation tanks supporting thousands of migratory birds—is vital for mitigating climate disasters and safeguarding rural water security. The Chief Minister pointed out that global Ramsar listing will boost eco-tourism, unlock international scientific collaborations, and attract targeted conservation funding. Stalin reiterated his government's resolve to preserve Tamil Nadu's natural heritage through rigorous conservation policies and community participation.
