Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unveiled a grand bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the historic Government Museum campus in Egmore, Chennai, with the commemorative proceedings broadcast live across media networks on India's seventy-fifth Independence Day. The ceremonial unveiling was attended by state cabinet ministers, freedom fighters, civic representatives, and citizens who gathered to honor the Father of the Nation.
In his address, Stalin described Mahatma Gandhi as the universal apostle of peace, non-violent resistance, and secular brotherhood whose life continues to inspire progressive struggles for human freedom across the world. He highlighted Gandhi's deep, transformative connection with Tamil Nadu, notably his historic decision in Madurai in 1921 to discard formal attire and adopt the humble loincloth of the impoverished peasant, which symbolized his total identification with India's oppressed masses.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Gandhi's vision of communal harmony and religious tolerance remains vital today in countering sectarian extremism and religious bigotry. By unveiling the memorial statue on this landmark national milestone, Stalin reiterated his administration's commitment to instilling Gandhian ethics of compassion, social inclusion, and moral rectitude across contemporary civic administration and society.
