Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin presided over the ceremonial presentation of the prestigious Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Classical Tamil Awards, conferring honors, citations, and cash prizes upon eminent scholars for their outstanding lifetime contributions to Tamil linguistic studies and literary research. The event brought together distinguished linguists, university professors, and cultural leaders in Chennai to celebrate the antiquity and enduring literary richness of the Tamil language.
Delivering the presidential address, Stalin recalled Karunanidhi's historic struggle and steadfast advocacy that secured official recognition for Tamil as India's first Classical Language by the Union Government in 2004. He emphasized that the state government established the Central Institute of Classical Tamil and instituted annual awards to encourage scientific archaeology, ancient epigraphy, and global translation of Sangam literary texts into major world languages.
Stalin affirmed that linguistic heritage serves as the foundation of Tamil cultural identity, social self-respect, and rationalist humanism. He pledged that his administration will continue providing generous research grants, digitizing ancient palm-leaf manuscripts, and expanding international Tamil academic chairs across prestigious universities worldwide to preserve classical literature for current residents and future generations.
