Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin paid homage to legendary freedom fighter Pooli Thevar on his birth anniversary, hailing his pioneering rebellion against British colonial subjugation. Stalin recalled Thevar's historic defiance when he refused to pay taxes to foreign rulers, famously declaring that not even a single coin would be surrendered, thereby writing the opening chapter of India's anti-colonial struggle in the eighteenth century.
The Chief Minister highlighted that successive DMK administrations have consistently preserved and honored the historical legacies of regional freedom fighters who fought against British dominance long before 1857. Under former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the Tamil Nadu government established a grand memorial palace at Nerkattumseval in Tirunelveli district, ensuring that Pooli Thevar's sacrifices remain permanently etched in public consciousness across generations of Tamil citizens.
Stalin pledged that the current state government will continue striving to ensure that Pooli Thevar's courage and supreme sacrifice receive rightful recognition across all of India. He reaffirmed that acknowledging early indigenous resistance heroes strengthens regional cultural pride and educates younger generations about Tamil Nadu's foundational role in the national liberation movement.
