Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recalled the monumental historic achievement of Muthamizharignar Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi in securing official Classical Language status for Tamil from the Union government in 2004. Stalin noted that this landmark recognition catalyzed the creation of a dedicated Tamil Chair at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India's foremost academic institution in New Delhi.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Tamil Chair, functioning under the Centre of Indian Languages in JNU's School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, has rendered invaluable contributions to comparative literary criticism, Dravidian linguistics, and ancient Sangam studies. Stalin affirmed that Kalaignar's visionary foresight ensured that Tamil was recognized alongside Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin as one of the world's most ancient classical languages, establishing academic footholds across leading global universities.
Stalin reaffirmed that his administration is building upon Kalaignar's glorious legacy by allocating state funds to upgrade the chair into an independent department.
