Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin made environmental history by launching the pioneering 'Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission' at the Tamil Nadu Climate Summit 2022 in Chennai, establishing the state as India's foremost leader in sub-national climate action. Delivering the keynote address before global climate scientists, policymakers, and green enterprise leaders, Stalin declared that just as the Dravidian Model pioneered social justice, it will now lead the country in delivering ecological and environmental justice.
The Climate Change Mission introduces a multi-pronged institutional framework to restore damaged natural ecosystems, expand green forest cover, revitalize coastal wetlands, and decarbonize state power and transport sectors over the long term. The government established special green climate companies, appointed dedicated district climate officers, and mobilized specialized green climate funds. Stalin emphasized that vulnerable low-income communities bear the heaviest brunt of extreme weather anomalies, making climate adaptation an essential dimension of equity.
Stalin asserted that sustainable economic growth must coexist harmoniously with environmental conservation. He reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions well ahead of national targets through green industrial policies, solar and wind energy expansion, and mass afforestation.
