Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially inaugurated the 'Chennai Sangamam - Namma Ooru Thiruvizha' cultural extravaganza at Island Grounds in Chennai, delivering an inspiring keynote address broadcast live to audiences across the state. The cultural festival, curated to celebrate the vibrant diversity of Tamil folk arts, features hundreds of folk musicians, dancers, and rural theatre troupes performing across sixteen designated public parks and open grounds throughout the metropolis.
In his inaugural speech, Stalin emphasized that bringing rural folk art forms into the heart of the capital city democratizes cultural access, allowing urban audiences and younger generations to experience the living traditions of their ancestors. He praised the boundless creativity and resilience of folk practitioners who have kept indigenous musical traditions and dance forms alive across generations despite historical economic marginalization and lack of royal patronage.
Stalin reiterated that his government will continuously expand financial welfare schemes, healthcare subsidies, and performance grants for folk artists. He affirmed that Chennai Sangamam reflects the Dravidian movement's enduring commitment to cultural democracy, elevating subaltern arts to pride of place on the public stage.
