Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the grand cultural festival 'Chennai Sangamam - Namma Ooru Thiruvizha' in Chennai, marking the convergence of classical and folk art traditions from across all thirty-eight districts of Tamil Nadu. Revived and expanded under the Dravidian Model government, the festival transforms public parks, beaches, and open grounds across the capital into vibrant performance arenas for grassroots artists during the Pongal harvest festive season.
Expressing deep satisfaction at inaugurating the event, Stalin emphasized that traditional folk performing arts—including Karagattam, Thappattam, Oyilattam, and Villupaattu—represent the authentic cultural heartbeat and indigenous wisdom of rural Tamil communities. He noted that the state government is providing extensive institutional patronage, performance remunerations, and public venues to ensure that traditional performing artists receive dignified livelihoods and broad public appreciation. The festival runs across multiple open venues throughout the capital during the festive week.
The Chief Minister called upon citizens and visiting tourists to attend the performances in large numbers and support grassroots folk artists. He affirmed that preserving indigenous folk arts and celebrating cultural pluralism is central to safeguarding Tamil heritage, creating an inclusive cultural environment where people from all walks of life celebrate together.
