Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a comprehensive critique of the Union Budget 2023 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, characterizing the fiscal proposals as an utter disappointment for the people of Tamil Nadu. Stalin asserted that the budget failed to address acute macroeconomic challenges facing ordinary citizens, notably surging price inflation, spiraling living costs, and rampant youth unemployment across urban and rural centers.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the central budget appeared tailored predominantly to benefit election-bound states and jurisdictions governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, while systematically neglecting the equitable fiscal requirements of progressive southern states. Major long-pending demands from Tamil Nadu—including enhanced funding for Chennai Metro Rail Phase II, dedicated disaster mitigation grants, railway modernization projects, and revised tax devolution shares—were conspicuously omitted from the expenditure allocations.
Stalin emphasized that genuine cooperative federalism requires the Union government to support performative states that contribute significantly to the national treasury. Instead, excessive centralization and declining revenue shares penalize progressive states. He urged the Union leadership to rectify regional imbalances in supplementary demands, reaffirming Tamil Nadu's resolve to demand equitable fiscal autonomy and fair central funding.
