Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially inaugurated the newly constructed martyrs memorial hall in Perungamanallur, Madurai district, while laying foundation stones for several commemorative architectural projects dedicated to historical leaders. The Perungamanallur memorial honors sixteen brave villagers who sacrificed their lives in 1920 protesting the oppressive Criminal Tribes Act enforced by the British colonial administration, an episode often remembered as South India's Jallianwala Bagh.
Stalin emphasized that the state government is deeply committed to preserving the memory of unsung anti-colonial fighters and social reformers whose sacrifices secured collective civil liberties. Alongside inaugurating the memorial hall, the Chief Minister initiated foundational works for memorial auditoriums honoring regional legislators and freedom fighters. He noted that physical memorials serve as vital civic anchors, educating future generations about the price paid to overturn discriminatory colonial laws and establish human dignity.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Dravidian Model administration accords utmost priority to memorializing grassroots social resistance and celebrating regional patriotism. By investing in dignified public monuments and modern commemorative spaces, the government ensures that the history of marginalized communities who fought colonial tyranny receives lasting institutional recognition across Tamil Nadu.
