Universities are not just spaces for learning but also for discussion, debate & dissent.

The cowardly attack on Tamil students by ABVP & vandalising the portraits of leaders like Periyar, Karl Marx at #JNU, is highly condemnable and calls for a strict action from the Univ Admin.

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a vehement condemnation of the cowardly physical attack unleashed upon Tamil students by ABVP activists at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, as well as the deliberate vandalization of portraits of social revolutionary Thanthai Periyar and philosopher Karl Marx. Stalin asserted that universities are not sterile training grounds for conformity, but vibrant intellectual centers specifically designed to foster critical discussion, robust debate, and democratic dissent.

The Chief Minister stated that the desecration of portraits honoring Periyar and Marx reveals the deep ideological intolerance and intellectual bankruptcy of right-wing student organizations. Rather than engaging in constructive academic debate, reactionary groups resort to brutal physical violence to silence progressive ideas and terrorize marginalized students. Stalin emphasized that Periyar's rationalist philosophy of self-respect and Karl Marx's analysis of class equality remain immortal ideals that cannot be diminished by cowardly acts of campus vandalism.

Stalin demanded that the university administration and Delhi Police immediately register formal criminal complaints, identify the masked attackers, and enforce severe disciplinary penalties. He called upon progressive student bodies across India to unite in defending secular academic freedoms against authoritarian suppression.
