Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin conveyed urgent distress and profound anguish to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar following yet another brazen act of physical violence committed by the Sri Lankan Navy against Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay. Stalin urged the Union government to register an immediate diplomatic protest with Colombo, demanding decisive high-level intervention to halt repeated maritime assaults and permanently protect the customary fishing rights of coastal Tamil communities.

The Chief Minister stressed that coastal fishing families in Tamil Nadu face constant vulnerability, physical intimidation, and unlawful mid-sea harassment while pursuing traditional maritime livelihoods in their historic fishing waters. Repeated incidents involving boat seizures, confiscation of expensive fishing equipment, and physical beatings severely undermine the economic sustenance of thousands of littoral families. Stalin pointed out that recurring maritime violence causes widespread anxiety and social unrest throughout the coastal districts of the state.

Stalin reiterated that safeguarding the fundamental constitutional rights and bodily safety of Indian citizens abroad and in coastal waters is an undeniable sovereign duty of the Union government. He urged the Ministry of External Affairs to negotiate a comprehensive bilateral mechanism guaranteeing peaceful fishing operations.
