Observing his seventieth birthday in Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin planted a commemorative tree sapling at his residential premises, invoking the wise environmental adage of his father and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi: "If we nurture a tree, the tree will nurture us." Stalin reflected that Karunanidhi consistently emphasized that humanity's survival and economic health remain fundamentally dependent on living in harmony with nature and preserving ecological equilibrium.
The Chief Minister noted that planting trees on personal anniversaries has become an established family and party tradition that reinforces collective environmental responsibility. Under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, the state government has embarked on an ambitious multi-year project to expand forest and tree cover from twenty-four percent to thirty-three percent of the state's total geographical area. Stalin stressed that increasing urban tree density is vital to combat heat islands, purify groundwater reserves, and protect community health.
Stalin urged citizens, educational institutions, and civic organizations to incorporate regular tree planting into their daily lives. He affirmed that his administration will continue to prioritize afforestation, wetland revival, and climate adaptation, ensuring that Tamil Nadu flourishes as an ecologically resilient state.
